About the Position

To ensure AT&T maintains true customer-centricity, a new Insights function is being organized within the Marketing and Growth Organization. This new team will be tasked with 1) assembling the foundational fact-base from which we begin all customer-centered activities at AT&T and 2) ensuring that stakeholder teams understand the relevance/importance of that fact-base (or individual insights) on AT&T’s business goals and ambitions. This new team will prioritize Marketing’s needs initially but will also deliver insights to other functions like PR, Social Media, Customer Experience, Network, Security, External Affairs, Product Development and more. The Insights Team will develop insights via novel and secondary research, will partner with external firms to leverage unique tools they’ve developed, will scan the marketplace for a wide variety of inputs (including but not limited to audience definitions, societal pressures, emerging trends, buying behaviors, generational differences, economic impacts, evolving attitudes, geographical differences, etc.) and will help internal teams understand the potential implications of what they’ve learned.  At their best, the Insights Team will uncover insights through the consolidation, translation and interpretation if isolated data sets and share findings that are clear and inspire action, deepen customer relationships and unlock enduring growth.

About the Team

The new Insights function will be housed within the Marketing Strategy, Insights, Brand & Design Team and will work with a variety of AT&T functions and levels (SVPs, VPs, AVPs, Directors, etc.) and outside partners, and the team will become the source of truth as it relates to where people and the marketplace are going and to what signals AT&T must pay close attention.

Required Experience and Expertise
The ideal candidate has at least 7 years of professional experience, a graduate or advanced degree in relevant areas for the position (MBA, Economics, Marketing, etc.), a strong record of developing insights and a breadth of marketing and strategy development experience from a world-class organization, and must demonstrate the following:


1. Strategic Leadership and Business Acumen

  • The Principal will need to have or quickly develop a keen understanding of AT&T's business strategies, models and strategic offerings AND be able to contribute valuable customer insights, competitive intelligence and external market dynamics to the discussion. She/he will do this by:
  • Defining information needs, conducting fact-finding and data analysis that supports/enables strategic problem-solving and sound decision-making.
  • Making use of existing customer and competitor data/research or developing new insights to quickly gain a deep understanding of customer wants and needs, the competitive environment, and white-spaces.
  • Articulating how we can deliver capabilities (not just ‘what’ but ‘how’) and the levers that impact the metrics that matter (e.g. NPS, Satisfaction, Loyalty, etc.)


2. Exceptional Collaboration and Influencing Skills

  • The Principal will work closely with various functional and business unit leaders & their teams, strategists and marketers, and numerous peers in Marketing, Network, Sales, Finance, Corporate Strategy, Human Resources etc. to mine for data and information, and then, deliver and socialize a common source of truth. She/he will do this in many cases in a highly-matrixed environment and will succeed by:
  • Establishing ‘Teflon’ credibility via deep subject-matter-at-hand expertise, a mastery of the topics-at-hand and the ability to extract true actionable insights from data.
  • Assembling well-organized, structured, data-supported and clearly articulated points-of-view in the face of skepticism, disbelief and/or opposition
  • Being an exceptionally strong listener and understanding how to ask open-ended questions that quickly get to the heart-of-the-matter and extract the most important points to form a cohesive opinion with the information at hand.
  • Investing their time and energy in building strong working relationships with numerous people at all levels of the organization
  • Being and exceptional communicator; whether writing or presenting
  • Demonstrating a high level of tenacity, diligence, patience and the ability to adapt to different styles and ways of working.


3. Other Required Personal Characteristics

  • A high degree of drive, energy and intellectual ability
  • Intellectual curiosity, ability to quickly grasp complex concepts and business models, understand current and future trends across a variety of topics, including social, technological, economic, new products/technologies (and their roadmaps), and changing market dynamics.
  • A natural collaborator. An individual with intellectual agility and organizational savvy to solve complex issues and find win-win solutions in a demanding environment.
  • A clear passion for the categories within which we operate and a willingness to fully-immerse themselves in the details.

  • Ability to speak-up and share a defined and well-articulated point-of-view, even if it’s unpopular.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a matrix environment, where influencing and relationship-building skills are essential.
  • Ability to build strong collaborative relationships with a diverse range of partners.
  • Demonstrated strength managing and collaborating in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict-management skills.
  • Solid experience rallying partners, opinion elites and external agencies to do work that not only delivers but pushes the thinking.
  • Acumen at working in a consultative or advisory capacity and a proven ability to influence at all levels of top-tier organizations.
  • Deep understanding of our company’s strategy and purpose, our marketing priorities and how customer-centric insights support these priorities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects in an enterprising atmosphere that requires resourcefulness, flexibility, tenacity and patience.
  • Significant experience within sophisticated management and operational systems common in larger companies.
  • Ability to shape and harness qualitative and quantitative research to drive good decision-making.
  • Ability to assimilate information and produce an educated POV for problem-solving for multiple audiences – Consumers, Business, Government, Community, Employees, etc.
  • Proficiency turning volumes of complex information, data, and insights into concise and compelling PowerPoint decks and/or prose that helps leaders understand the situation, the problem(s) to solve, the options for resolution, and the operational implications of a decision.
